Sammy Watkins' foot causing severe discomfort, could miss weeks

The Buffalo Bills' offense didn't exactly light up the scoreboard in their season-opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Buffalo was held to 160 yards of total offense, its lowest total since 2006, when the Bears held them to 145 yards of offense. It was the 25th time in Buffalo's franchise history it recorded 160 total yards or fewer, per Pro-Football-Reference.
If you thought that was the worst news of the day, you're wrong. According to areport from the New York Daily News, Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (who finished with four catches for 43 yards) was experiencing "severe discomfort" in his foot during and after the game, and needed to have it X-rayed afterward to ensure it wasn't broken again (which it wasn't). He initially broke the foot back in April, though it wasn't reported until May. The discomfort is reportedly so bad that it could knock Watkins out for several weeks, depending on how it feels over the next few days.
Per CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, doctors have advised Watkins that there is no procedure he can undergo and it is a simply pain threshold issue related to the screws he had inserted in his foot. He is experimenting with different types of cleats to try to alleviate the problem but it is something that continues to dog him. In a short week -- Buffalo plays the Jets on Thursday -- team sources say the Bills will likely rest him a few days and then assess his condition midweek to determine Watkins' level of discomfort.
In a Buffalo offense not exactly teeming with playmakers, Watkins is the best option they have. He's Tyrod Taylor's clear No. 1 wideout and likely the best overall player on the offense. LeSean McCoy is a big-play threat as well out of the backfield, but there's nobody that threatens defenses on the outside in the manner Watkins does. Losing him for any period of time would be a huge blow to a team that really needs its offense to cover up for the disastrous offseason the defense had.
The Bills lost several players from their for extended periods due to injury and suspension (Shaq Lawson, Reggie Ragland, Marcell Dareus) and are already coming off a poor defensive season. With a schedule that sees them play the Jets on Thursday and then the Cardinals and Patriots the two weeks after that, the Bills need their offense to be firing on all cylinders to keep up. If Watkins is out or limited in any way, that may prove tougher than expected.

No. 99: Marshawn Lynch

Who had a better summer than Marshawn Lynch? The retired Seahawks running back practiced in full pads with the Cal football team in Australia, helped build homes in Haiti, and dropped some of all-time quotes in a conversation with SI’s Jon Wertheim. (“You ate cereal before?”) Lynch’s successful BeastMode clothing line and his reported thriftiness should serve as an example to current and aspiring NFL players.

ESPN’s fantasy football site isn’t working on the most important day of the season

Update: Service has been restored and ESPN provided us with the following statement:
“ESPN Fantasy is restored and we will continue to monitor. We identified a backend data access issue and resolved as quickly as possible. The issue did not impact data for teams, leagues or rosters. We sincerely apologize to all ESPN fantasy users.”
As if the rising popularity of daily fantasy sports sites aren’t giving ESPN enough to worry about this season, the fantasy sports provider’s platform has been down all day.
Today around 1pm ET / 10am PT (which is when the first round of NFL games started) ESPN’s fantasy sports platform crashed and became unreachable on the web and in their mobile app.
ESPN confirmed the outage on their Twitter about an hour after kickoff at 11am PT, and as of now (more than 4 hours later) it is still down. While ESPN’s fantasy home page is up, as soon as you click to view your league or draft a new team the site won’t load, with your browser saying that the server dropped the connection. The app is just displaying a blank page, saying that “there was an error while trying to reach Fantasy Football”.
Since today is basically a holiday for die hard fantasy sports fans, the outage hasn’t been well received. Fans typically check their fantasy team and scores every few minutes on Sunday (especially on the first day of the season), and now they have no idea how their teams are doing.
Even Claire McCaskill, the senior U.S senator from Missouri tweeted about how disappointed she is with the outage.
While normally customers would just head to a competitor when a service goes down, ESPN’s fantasy players are essentially locked into the platform all season since they’ve already drafted teams and joined season-long leagues.
Updated to reflect that ESPN stopped offering paid leagues last year.

NFLPA, NFL to review handling of hit on Cam Newton

The NFL and NFLPA announced Sunday they will initiate a review of the handling of a helmet-to-helmet hit on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton in Thursday night's loss to the Broncos.
The NFLPA announced via Twitter that it would seek a compliance investigation.
The NFLPA will initiate a compliance investigation into the Cam Newton incident from Thursday night's game.
Later, the NFL released a statement saying it, too, would initiate a review of the medical team's response to the hit on Newton.
Newton took at least four helmet-to-helmet hits in Thursday night's 21-20 loss, including one on Carolina's final series. Only one penalty was called -- on the last hit -- but it was negated by an intentional grounding penalty called on Newton.
Medical officials went on the field Thursday night to check Newton after that final helmet-to-helmet hit and determined he showed no signs of a concussion, as first reported by NFL Network and confirmed by ESPN.
The medical officials looked at video of the hit, which left the quarterback facedown on the turf and looking shaken, then went to see Newton. According to the NFL Network report, the game was stopped for 2:22, and while the offsetting penalties were sorted out, it was determined that Newton showed no signs of a concussion.
The NFL on Friday morning released a statement saying the league's concussion protocol was properly executed. But the players' union said it would exercise its right to investigate the matter.
Under the policy, agreed on in July, if the NFLPA's findings dispute the league's findings, the union can appeal to a neutral arbitrator, who has the authority to discipline the Panthers and others who were responsible for Newton's well-being.
"This is why we have the new policy," union spokesman George Atallah said Friday. "We'll look into it."
After the game, Panthers coach Ron Rivera questioned the non-calls, but he did not question the officials or doctors for not placing Newton in the concussion protocol.
"I'm not going to question the doctors. OK?'' Rivera said. "There is a protocol. There is a set of rules that these doctors, these trained professionals, have to follow. The understanding is when everything first happened, they followed the protocol.''
Rivera said the team doctor and an unaffiliated neurological consultant agreed Newton did not show symptoms of a concussion to the point they felt he needed to leave the game. Neither did the officials on the field or in the replay booth.
Team officials said Newton was asked questions four times following the game -- in the locker room, on the bus ride to the airport, on the plane and back in Charlotte -- to make sure there were no side effects from the hits to the head.

Rivera said Newton passed all of the tests.

UFC 203 Results: Winners, Bonuses And Highlights

Miocic gave the 18,785 fans in Cleveland a scare early in the first frame. He was dropped by a hard left hand to the face from Overeem. The challenger tried to lock in a guillotine to get the submission, but Miocic escaped.

After the bout, Overeem claimed Miocic tapped during this exchange, but after several looks at the sequence, there was clearly no tap. Once Miocic recovered, he aggressively pushed forward until he was able to trip Overeem up and gain top position.
It didn’t take him long to finish the show with some vicious ground and pound. A series of downward strikes left Overeem out cold and Miocic retained his title.
