Stipe Miocic had a much better night than CM Punk at UFC 203 in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday night. The UFC heavyweight champion successfully defended his title by scoring a first-round KO victory over Alistair Overeem.
Miocic gave the 18,785 fans in Cleveland a scare early in the first frame. He was dropped by a hard left hand to the face from Overeem. The challenger tried to lock in a guillotine to get the submission, but Miocic escaped.
After the bout, Overeem claimed Miocic tapped during this exchange, but after several looks at the sequence, there was clearly no tap. Once Miocic recovered, he aggressively pushed forward until he was able to trip Overeem up and gain top position.
It didn’t take him long to finish the show with some vicious ground and pound. A series of downward strikes left Overeem out cold and Miocic retained his title.
